Do you wish you could magically improve teacher and staff wellbeing in schools?

As teachers and principals ourselves, we understand how overwhelmed, exhausted, and unappreciated you can feel as a teacher or staff member in a school. We get how you can be so busy looking after everyone else, that you simply don’t have the energy to care for yourself too. It’s why we want to help take care of you.

Are you:

  • A teacher who is worn out and afraid from all the COVID-19 changes, in need of tiny wellbeing tools, and a safe place to talk about the struggles you’re experiencing?
  • A year level or department team longing for a small, joyful way to positively support each other, as you continue navigating so much change?
  • A school wanting to show your teachers and staff that you appreciate them and are committed to helping them care for their wellbeing in the midst of all the upheaval they have been experiencing?
  • A coalition of schools, school district, or education department that needs to make it easier, more effective, and more affordable for the schools, teachers, and staff you support to care for their wellbeing?

Here’s the good news: after researching, teaching, and coaching teachers and schools around the world to care for their wellbeing, we’ve packaged everything we learned into one simple Education Lab Wellbeing Fast Tracks program for you.

  • 98% of our participants at Melbourne University have said they would recommend the Wellbeing Labs workshops to their peers and 91% are confident they could apply the knowledge and skills they learned.”

She has assisted our faculty, prepared and presented at our parent launch of Positive Education (800 people) and has delivered professional learning sessions to our staff. Her professional approach, knowledge and expertise in facilitating our Appreciative Inquiry Summit has been instrumental in the success of our journey.

  • Our school hosted an appreciative inquiry summit to deeply explore wellbeing from a strengths-based perspective. Working with Michelle McQuaid's team to bring our summit to life was an absolute joy. The summit itself was a positive wellbeing intervention for our many participants, and the team did an incredible job adapting to our desire to bring student voices to the forefront of our dreams and designs. We now have a group of passionate wellbeing champions with a shared vision for our school's future.

We benefited from our work with Alli by the way she provided practical application of evidence-based research and encouraged staff to think about their own wellbeing before designing and trialing positive psychology interventions for their students. Alli emphasized the need to take small steps and building the program slowly in order for it to be authentic and long-lasting. You won’t regret engaging Alli to work with your organization's wellbeing journey.

Why Does Teacher And Staff Wellbeing In Schools Matter?

We recently asked an independent sample of Australian educators how they were doing, given the disruption and uncertainty during 2020 that their schools have experienced. We found:

  • 77.4% reported that their levels of struggle have increased significantly, with dealing with colleagues/parents (34.1%) and caring for their mental (33%) and physical health (30.8%) their biggest sources of struggle.
  • Unfortunately, 84.9% of educators felt it safest to keep these struggles to themselves at work, only 52.7% felt they were completely able to manage their wellbeing, and only 48.4% felt extremely motivated to improve their wellbeing.
  • As a result, perhaps it is not surprising that 43% of educators reported lower levels of wellbeing.
Of course, it is perfectly healthy for educators’ levels of wellbeing to ebb and flow based on what is happening around them at work, at home, and in their community. Given the sharp increase in educators’ levels of struggle in 2020, coupled with the growing body of research suggesting that increased teacher wellbeing lowers the risk of burnout while improving student wellbeing and academic performance, there has never been a more important time to invest in staff wellbeing.

But how do you fit this in with everything else your teachers and staff are juggling?

How Can You Improve Teacher And School Wellbeing?

Based on our research and experience in schools, we believe there are three important steps worth prioritizing:

Create a common language and a shared evidence-based toolbox of tiny wellbeing actions.

Wellbeing perceptions, experiences, and behaviors are diverse, and spread through a complicated web of social connections, which means that caring for our wellbeing is never a solo endeavor. By improving the ability and motivation of your teachers and staff to care for their own wellbeing, and to support the wellbeing of others, you are more likely to create a thriving school environment.

Provide safe wellbeing coaching spaces to normalize struggle and celebrate learning and growth.

Coaching is the most effective way to amplify and embed wellbeing behaviors because it provides your teachers and staff with safe spaces to talk about what’s working well, where they are struggling, and what they are learning so they can more intelligently, confidently, and resiliently navigate the changes and challenges they are experiencing.

Make it easy to quickly, reliably, and confidentially measure wellbeing.

Sustaining wellbeing changes relies on feedback that reflects the progress teachers and staff are making – individually and collectively – and pinpoints opportunities for adjustments. This is why Professor Martin Seligman once told us that the most important step he’d recommend any workplace takes when it comes to improving wellbeing, is to measure it.

How Does The Education Lab Wellbeing & Resilence Series Work?

Each week you’ll attend a live 30-minute class – You’ll walk away with bite-sized, scientific insights into your wellbeing and tiny tools you can immediately apply, and have a chance to chat one-on-one with teachers and staff in other schools, so you can learn from each other.

All classes are recorded – If you want to go back at your own pace, or you can’t make it to the live class one week, then you’ll have the recording, which is yours to keep.

Cheat sheets and challenges are provided – To help you transfer your learning into the real world, we’ll provide a cheat sheet summarizing the key content, and a tiny wellbeing challenge (that will take no more than 30 seconds each day), so you can immediately apply what you’re learning.

Accountability is strongly encouraged – We know caring for your wellbeing can be hard. So after the call, if you want to stay and chat to our wellbeing coaches, we’ll be hanging out for the next 30 minutes.

An evidence-based Wellbeing Toolbox is built – Throughout the training, we’ll be giving you a range of tiny tools to help you care for your wellbeing. These are yours to steal-with-pride, and use to support yourself and others.

Support is ongoing – Our online platform makes it easy to access all the materials, to chat to us and each other during the week in the forums, and to access further resources including podcasts and bonus cheat sheets with the world’s leading wellbeing researchers.

What Does The Education Lab Wellbeing & Resilience Series Cost?

We have intentionally designed and priced the delivery of this program so we can show our appreciation to educators for the wonderful work they do. If you would like the program – or a version of the program – delivered privately for your school, then please just ask our team.

As a benefit-driven organization, we are committed to making the skills and support for caring for wellbeing as effective, affordable, and accessible as we can. As parents and educators, we are so grateful for what schools do every day for our communities – particularly during the challenges we continue to face.
