Cultivating Kind Cultures in Workplaces & Communities

Healthy workplace cultures are top of mind today, as organizations consider the future of work, the impact of the Great Resignation, and how to help people feel supported to find deeper purpose and motivation on this side of the pandemic. While so much remains uncertain with chaotic politics and economies, it is especially important to remain kind to ourselves and each other through the continued tumult of change.

It would be great if everyone treated us with kindness all the time, but unfortunately, this is not many peoples’ reality. In fact, research by Christine Porath, an associate professor at Georgetown University who studies the effects of incivility, has found that 98% of people experience incivility, and 99% witness it. This includes a lot of different behaviors, such as publicly mocking or belittling someone, teasing in ways that sting, or taking credit for wins while pointing the finger at others when difficulties arise. Incivility leads to a toxic rather than healthy culture in an organization.

Culture is to humans like water is to fish. “Even when we don’t pause to consider it or create it mindfully, it is all around us.”

The great news is that we can cultivate kind cultures in our workplaces. Cultivating kind cultures in workplaces is similar to cultivating kind cultures in schools and communities. People are people wherever we go. We are always creating or consuming our shared culture. Is it healthy? Is it kind?

To explore how we might cultivate kind cultures in workplaces and communities, we will be using an approach called Appreciative Inquiry and its Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny stages as we explore our generative topic.

Join Valorie Burton of the CAPP Institute and Brooke Jones, VP of the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, along with our own Dr. Michelle McQuaid as they share how they build cultures of kindness in their workplace communities. Then, along with hundreds of colleagues from around the world, participate in a FREE 90-minute virtual Appreciative Inquiry Workshop on cultivating kind cultures in workplaces and communities.

To be clear, this will not be a talkfest. Here’s what you’ll get in return for your time participating in this event:

  • You’ll hear positive psychology business leaders’ thoughts on why it’s imperative to build cultures of kindness − and how they do it themselves!
  • You’ll get to meet wonderful practitioners from all over the world as we come together to discover, dream, design, and deliver ways to help workplaces and communities become kinder.
  • You’ll come away with a treasure chest of new tools to help others, and that you can share with others.
  • You’re welcome to take our AI Workshop participant guide and steal-it-with-pride for your own online events.
  • You’ll get special access to a new book “Live Kind, Be Happy” published this year that our own Louis Alloro co-authored with psychotherapist Celeste DiMilla.

Trust us when we say you’ll feel good from being surrounded by like-minded and -hearted folks engaged in meaningful and important dialogue.
